Marcus King Starts Homegrown Festival

Facebook Event

When I talked with Marcus King a couple of weeks ago about his inaugural Family Reunion Festival he was in England with the band about to perform at a festival there. If you search through Youtube videos of King you’ll see a wide variety of videos of the guitarist and frontman performing in different guitar shops, and even being interviewed at a festival in Japan. In only a couple of years the band’s performed and toured all over the world, hopped on stage at huge events, and spent plenty of time away from their home in the upstate. That was the big idea behind this festival, to come back, and spend a little time at home with family and friends, and start to reflect on the last couple of years and how far the band has come.

King said “I remember these gatherings were always the happiest time for me as a kid. A stress free environment where you are free to love the people you’re around,” explains King. “That’s the aesthetic we want to bring to our festival. Community and happiness. There are no separate agendas being forced on anyone. Just an all-around good time.”

This weekend the Marcus King Band headlines both nights of their festival that brings tons of great acts to foothills at one of the most magical times of years at Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain, NC just as you’re entering the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The rise of the Marcus King Band seemed to be rapid. They quickly moved up the lineup on local festivals and this spring were one of the headlining acts at SouthSounds Festival in Mobile, AL, one that we traveled to cover for SceneSC. The entire time we were there all the talk was about Marcus King, and rightfully so. With their new album out they made their cable TV debut on CBS Saturday Morning. I asked King if he’s so caught up in everything to ever reflect on how far they’ve come and how quickly, but his reaction wasn’t what I thought it would be. It’s all part of the journey for them, and they’re enjoying every second of it. I hope they’re writing it all down, because at this pace they’re going to go from morning to late night TV in no time.
