At the age of 4 with nothing but a sawed-off pair of drum sticks and a few pots and pans, Jonathan began his lifelong journey as a musician.
By the time he was 8, he began studying under locally renowned drum instructor and co-founder of Freeway Music, Tony Lee. A few years later, he became a member of his first band, South of Atlanta, and spent many school nights playing at area venues like New Brookland Tavern.
Jonathan is currently a member of local funk-rock band Ropeswing Marathon (You can find their music on Spotify and iTunes). You’re most likely to find them playing at venues in the local music scene; however, they’ve also opened for celebrity artists such as Cassadee Pope (winner of NBC’s “The Voice”), Crobot, and Framing Hanley.
Jonathan’s musical influences range from the Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, to The Aristocrats, to Led Zeppelin, to the Dave Brubeck Quartet. No one is better than the other. Although there is no best drummer in the world, his personal favorite would either have to be either JoJo Mayer or Benny Greb. Dave Weckl is pretty great, too!
As a student, Jonathan’s passion for music and curiosity is boundless. He has found that you can learn anything from anyone and that the more you know, the more there is to learn. As a teacher, his philosophy is that if there’s a will, there’s a way. Anyone can learn to be proficient at their instrument if they so desire.
Music is an outlet, a passion. Jonathan is here to provide you with the information and the skill set to achieve whatever goals you set for yourself. Every student has a different toolbox. It is the teacher’s job to first make the student aware of the tools he or she possesses, then show them how those tools can be used to express a thought or idea. This is how art is made!
