Mary McElmurray

Being born in a musical family, I am blessed to never know a time without music in my life. At
age seven I began piano lessons and have loved playing and studying it ever since. When an
older sister started violin, I joined in, too. A few years later, the lever harp became my next
instrument.
I cannot imagine a life without music and am excited to share my passion and knowledge of
music with my students. I am still inspired by my first piano teacher who gave me a great
foundation in piano teaching, music theory and music history. My string teachers have been
excellent models, as well.
I believe that music deeply influences and enriches life. As a teacher of all ages for piano and
violin, I work to nurture each student in an enthusiastic atmosphere for learning, recognizing that
each is different in background, personality, and ability. I individualize instruction to meet the
needs of each student in his or her musical journey.
My journey has not just included music but also business, as I worked in various roles, from
management in a rural teaching family medicine center. Music has now returned as my primary
focus for teaching, performing, and composing. I especially enjoy playing for weddings and
church services.
My formal education includes a BA in Humanities with an emphasis in Music and certificates in
Piano Pedagogy and Music Composition. Returning for graduate study, I desired to be
challenged professionally and personally, and am pursuing a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary
Studies in Music and Life Coaching through Liberty University.
