Richard is adept at playing in a wide variety of settings, having trained in both classical and jazz guitar at the University of South Carolina, as well as studying for several years with Drew Medlin (Freeway Ballentine owner).
He recorded and toured with Ropeswing Marathon, a local group he not only founded, but also for which he was the primary songwriter. Richard also recorded with Bellavida, another highly respected local band.
His major influences include John Scofield, Greg Howe, Snarky Puppy, and Radiohead and his teaching style focuses on fostering good technique, a firm grasp of music theory, and becoming comfortable with improvisation. Richard prepares students for whatever musical situation in which they might find themselves.
